Poulaine lifted the wine he had brought and clinked it against Reilly’s beer bottle. “Little Houghton.”

“And you’re celebratin’ that little name for what reason? Where is it?”

“East of York. You can find it on a postal map as I did.”

“Are you saying Delaney is there?”

“Col. Charles Audley is there, and I believe the man who disguised himself as Keiran Delaney is there as well. All signs point to it. And you should know this: Delaney and Jean Louis Jettere are the same person.”

“Never knew a Jettere. All I need to know is Delaney. I suppose you don’t want me to kill Delaney on sight.”

“Help me get Audley, and then you can have Delaney.”

“Right then. Audley is in Little Houghton. Villages are hard to get into. Few places to hide except way out in the country. Only a few people, so strangers get noticed.”

“You will have a reason to be in the village. You are going to take over a job. As a gardener. You know how to keep a garden, do you not?”

“I ain’t dug a hole since I walked away from my ma telling me to do just that. But I’ll do it to get Delaney. You know this job is waiting?”

“I have a contact here in London who has a man in place there.”

“A village in Yorkshire? Who’s there that’s so important—besides this Audley man?”

“That need not concern either of us.”

As Poulaine’s carriage rolled away from Reilly’s lodgings, he rubbed his hands together. The net was beginning to close. He would have to cast another one to catch de la Croix. Nevertheless, the bribes he had paid that allowed him to come to England were reaping the rewards he had so long desired.
